The Department for Youth and Universities, under the Office of the His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Saeed Al-Hakim, organized a forum for the first batch of Iraqi university students and educational institutions, which took place at Madrasah Ayatollah Sayyid Mohsin al-Hakim in the holy city of Najaf, during a summer holiday course. In this forum, the scholar Sayyid Tu’mah al-Jabiri gave a lecture entitled, ‘The Importance of the Age of Youth’.
The Sayyid began his talk by welcoming those attending and praised their participation in such an event in the vicinity of the grave of Imam Ali (peace be upon him). He spoke of the virtues of being on such sacred grounds, and of the need to capitalize on this time near the Imam (peace be upon him), and to feel the spiritual change within us.
He emphasized the importance of the age of youth in the life of a human, as that time in the life of a person which will define the success during his life journey, or lack thereof. During this important part of one’s life, it is necessary to have cognizance and education. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said, “You, the youth of the community, will soon be the elders of the community.” They have this responsibility and they are the future leaders of Iraq.

Day Questions

Is it permissible to offer the prayer in the dark when one cannot see what he is prostrating upon?

It is permissible to pray in the dark if prostration is done on what is permissible to prostrate upon. If prostration is not done so, then the prayer should be repeated based on compulsory precaution.

How can I bring myself in to Taqleed?

By referring to and acting upon the verdicts of the religious scholar who has reached the level of Ijtihad and has the qualifications of a Marja and being the most knowledgeable.

When I go to study in Najaf, then what do I have to study to become a Mujtahid?

Ijtihad is not a goal that a student should have from the beginning. A believer should aim to fulfill the religious responsibilities of upholding the orders of the Sharia; one of them is learning the Islamic laws and teaching them. This could be achieved by learning more about the religion – and not necessarily reaching the level of Ijtihad – by which a believer could serve the Right Path. One could serve the religion and be a role model amongst his society, family and friends by being obedient to the Islamic laws and by spreading the religious teachings in the areas where he resides. Ijtihad is a talent that can be achieved by studying with the guidance of Almighty Allah. A religious student should study hard and make use of his time as much as possible. If he achieves this, then he can thank Almighty Allah for this bounty. If he does not, he can still serve the religion.
